Effortless Oven Cleaning:

Pyrolytic Cleaning and HydroClean Technology

Cleaning your oven, or combination steam oven, doesn’t have to be hard. With Miele’s innovations—like pyrolytic cleaning and HydroClean—maintenance becomes effortless. Discover why Miele is the expert choice for those who love to cook but don't necessarily love to clean: smart, powerful, and easy.

Understanding the Pyrolytic oven

A pyrolytic oven is a self-cleaning appliance that uses extreme heat, typically around 400°C, to burn away grease, grime and food residues leaving only fine ash behind. This ash can then be easily wiped away, leaving the interior spotless without the use of chemical cleaners or elbow grease.  Miele was among the pioneers of pyrolytic cleaning technology and continues to lead the way in refining it. Today’s Miele pyrolytic ovens combine performance with thoughtful engineering, designed to make your cooking and cleaning experience more enjoyable.

With just a few taps on the control panel, Miele’s pyrolytic cycle transforms baked-on spills into dry residue. The oven locks automatically for safety, then heats up to 400°C to incinerate food residues. Once complete, it cools, unlocks, and is ready to be wiped clean — no scrubbing, no harsh chemicals. Unlike other self-cleaning ovens, Miele models often include PyroFit accessories — wire racks and runners that can stay in the oven during the process. Their pyrolysis-safe coating means there’s no need to remove them, making cleaning easier and more efficient.

Setting up your Miele oven for pyrolytic cleaning is simple: 1. Remove any loose food debris.  2. Ensure the oven is empty of non-PyroFit accessories.  3. Select the desired cleaning level (light, medium or intensive) based on how soiled the oven is.  4. Start the cleaning cycle and let the technology do the rest.  A full cycle typically takes between 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the level chosen. For best results, Miele recommends wiping away any remaining ash with a damp cloth once the oven has cooled down.

Self-cleaning

Combination steam ovens: HydroClean

What is HydroClean?

HydroClean1 is Miele’s wet self-cleaning function for the stainless-steel compartment of our DGC Pro combination steam ovens. Using the HydroCleaner, a special detergent developed for this cleaning function, even stubborn, burnt-on food residues can be removed with ease – helping to keep the oven interior looking almost as good as new throughout the product’s entire life cycle.

How does Miele HydroClean work?

HydroClean gives the stainless steel oven compartment of your Miele combination steam oven2 a thorough clean – automatically. All you need to do is remove the side racks, lower the top heat element and place the HydroCleaner in position. The appliance takes care of the rest, by running the programme in three phases: Cleaning, rinsing, and drying.

The cleaning agent is biodegradable, free from microplastics and safe for use in food environments, with no chemical odours. Even the bottle is made from recycled plastic and is fully recyclable.

When do I need to activate HydroClean?

Miele recommends running HydroClean once every three months - though this depends on how often and how intensively the oven is used. If you roast meat frequently or use combination cooking with higher temperatures, more regular cleaning will maintain best performance. For those who use the steam-only function more often, HydroClean can be run less frequently, as food is less likely to become baked-on.

FAQs Pyrolytic and Hydroclean ovens

Do pyrolytic ovens and HydroClean ovens use a lot of electricity?

Miele’s self-cleaning technologies are designed for both convenience and efficiency. HydroClean, even on its highest setting (level 3), consumes just under 2 kWh. In comparison, pyrolytic cleaning (level 3) uses approximately 6.9 kWh. While pyrolysis involves higher energy use due to extreme temperatures, it eliminates the need for detergents and manual scrubbing. Many users find that running the cycle only a few times a year strikes a perfect balance between cleanliness and efficiency.

Are Miele combinations steam ovens easy to clean?

Yes. Combination Steam ovens by design produce minimal baked-on residue, making daily maintenance easier. The stainless-steel interior is smooth and accessible, while the HydroClean programme provides deep cleaning when needed. Simply wipe down after use and activate HydroClean every few months to maintain a spotless interior.

Can a pyrolytic oven or HydroClean combination steam oven clean the glass door?

Yes. During a pyrolytic cycle, the oven’s high temperature removes residues from the inner glass as well as the cavity. For Combination steam ovens, HydroClean softens grime across all internal surfaces, including the inside of the door. Once the programme finishes, a simple wipe is all that’s needed to restore a clear view inside your oven.

How often should you activate the pyrolytic or HydroClean cycle?

Pyrolytic cleaning: Run after heavy use or when you notice visible build-up. For regular family cooking, this may be every two to three months.  HydroClean: Recommended every three months, or more frequently if you roast meats or use higher temperature settings often. Steam-focused use may require less frequent activation.
