For a better tomorrow

The new EU and UK energy label

In December 2019, the EU Commission issued new directives on energy consumption labeling and on the eco design of dishwashers, refrigeration appliances, wine units, washing machines and washer-dryers.

From March 2021, all manufacturers are required to provide a new-style label with all new appliances sold in the UK and Europe.

These changes are being introduced to help consumers make an informed choice about the appliances they use.

The new energy label from 2021

The new energy labels help consumers to make informed choices about their appliances, taking not only their energy use into account, but also considering water usage and noise levels.

Important energy label changes

New legal requirements and energy efficiency class thresholds have led to a more rigorous label classification.

Eliminating the plus classes for energy efficiency, for example A+++, and reclassifying from A to G, will make it easier for consumers to make informed choices.

From 1st March 2021, you can obtain further information on each appliance using the QR code, which will take you to the EU database (EPREL).

Why are appliances currently supplied with two energy labels?

For the transition period until March 2021 all appliances must be supplied with both old and new energy labels. By adjusting the energy efficiency (A to G) scale on the new energy label, it appears as if the energy efficiency of the machine has deteriorated. Therefore by including both old and new labels with the appliance, a fair comparison between the old and new scale can be made.

New energy label for dishwashers

Key:

1. QR code for product information in EU database
2. Manufacturer's name or logo
3. Product model designation
4. Energy efficiency scale from A to G
5. Product energy efficiency class
6. Energy consumption in kWh/100 operating cycles (in the ECO programme)
7. Number of place settings for the ECO programme (loading capacity)
8. Water consumption in litres/operating cycle (in the ECO programme)
9. ECO programme running time
10. Noise emissions, expressed in dB(A) re 1pW, and noise emission class
11. Regulation number

New on the label:

  • QR code for further product information.
  • Classification of dishwashers in energy efficiency classes A to G continue to be based on the ECO programme.
  • Alteration to test standard. Measuring is intended to reflect usage behaviour more accurately and therefore uses, for example, cups, pots and plastic utensils to assess cleaning and drying processes.
  • Duration of the ECO programme.
  • Water consumption per wash cycle and electricity consumption per 100 wash cycles.
  • Introduction of noise classes A - D to make the noise value in dB(a) more transparent.

6. Annual energy consumption in kWh/year
7. Sum total of space in freezer compartments
8. Sum total of space in refrigeration compartments
9. Sound emissions in dB (A) re 1pW
10. EU regulation number

New on the label:

  • QR code for further product information.
  • Classification of refrigeration appliances in energy efficiency classes A to G.
  • Noise classes A - D, to make the noise value in dB(a) more transparent.

New energy label for wine units

New energy label for washing machines

Key:

1. QR code for product information in EU database
2. Manufacturer's name or logo
3. Product model designation
4. Energy efficiency scale from A to G
5. Product energy efficiency class
6. Weighted energy consumption in kWh/100 operating cycles (consumption is calculated on the basis of an average full, half and quarter of the maximum load)
7. Full load in kg for ECO 40-60
8. ECO 40-60 programme running time with a full load
9. Weighted water consumption in litres/operating cycle (consumption is calculated on the basis of an average full, half and quarter of the maximum load)
10. Spin efficiency class
11. Sound emissions in spin cycle of 'ECO 40-60' cycle in dB(A) re 1pW
12. EU regulation number

New on the label:

  • QR code for further product information.
  • Classification of washing machines in energy efficiency classes A to G.
