How to Eliminate Bad Odours from Your Washing Machine

Over time, your Miele washing machine can accumulate dirt, grime, and mildew, leading to a musty or sour smell. Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take to get rid of the odours and get your washing machine smelling fresh again, take a look.

What Causes Bad Smells in Washing Machines?

One of the most common causes of washing machine odor is leaving wet clothes inside the washing machine for too long. Other causes include a buildup of detergent, dirt, and grime, which can accumulate over time and create an odor. Hard water and infrequent use can also contribute to an unpleasant smell in the washing machine.

Six Tips to Eliminate Bad Odours

1. Cleaning the detergent drawer

Detergent and fabric softener can build up and form a residue that can create an unpleasant smell.

To clean the detergent drawer, first remove it from the machine. Then, using a mixture of hot water and dish soap, scrub the drawer with a brush until all residue is removed. Let the drawer dry fully before replacing.

2. Cleaning the drum and interior

First remove any visible debris with a cloth or brush. Then, use a mixture of warm water and vinegar to wipe down the drum thoroughly.

3. Cleaning the filter

The filter in your washing machine can become clogged with lint, hair, and other debris over time. This buildup can lead to unpleasant odors in your machine.

To remove the buildup, locate the filter (typically at the bottom of the machine) and remove it. Clean it with hot water and a mild detergent.

You can also use Miele IntenseClean to clean your washing machine. Make sure to dry the drum thoroughly before closing the door.

4. Use UltraPhase detergent

UltraPhase detergent is designed to work perfectly with your Miele washing machine, reducing build-up you can get from powders and residues from cheaper alternatives that can lead to unpleasant smells.

5. Run your Miele washing machine cleaning cycle

To run this cycle, simply select the appropriate option on your machine, or run a 90-degree cotton wash with a towel inside.

You’ll get a notification on your machine when the cleaning cycle is due.

6. Leave the door open after each wash

A top tip for avoiding bad smells is to leave the door of your Miele washing machine open for at least an hour after each use. This can prevent moisture.
