FAQ: Your frequently asked questions about commercial washing machines
In this section you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about our Miele Professional washing machines. Whether you want to find out about the differences between commercial and domestic machines, are looking for the right load capacities for your business, or want to learn more about connections, energy consumption and maintenance – here you will find all the important information in a compact and understandable format. Our aim is to provide you with clear guidance so that you can find the right solution for your requirements and make the best use of your machines
Commercial washing machines differ from domestic machines in several key ways:
- Service life and load capacity
Commercial machines are designed for intensive, continuous use. They feature robust components and a significantly longer service life, even when used daily under heavy loads. Domestic machines, however, are designed for private use with lower frequency of use. - Programme running times and efficiency
Commercial appliances offer shorter programme running times and optimised wash cycles to process large quantities of laundry quickly and efficiently. Domestic machines generally require longer running times and are less designed for speed. - Regulatory requirements
Commercial washing machines are subject to the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC), which sets out strict safety and design requirements for industrial machines. Domestic appliances, however, fall under the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), which is designed for private use and defines other safety standards.
Commercial washing machines are used in a wide range of industries, wherever large quantities of laundry need to be cleaned regularly and reliably. Typical applications include:
- Small businesses
For example, hairdressers, fitness studios or small catering businesses that wash towels, workwear or table linen on a daily basis. - OPL laundries (on-premise laundries) that wash large quantities of laundry in-house, such as hotels, dry cleaners, contract cleaners, care facilities and hospitals, and which require powerful machines for bed linen, towels and workwear – often with high hygiene standards.
- Self-service operations
Launderettes or communal laundry rooms in living accommodations rely on robust appliances that can handle many cycles per day. - Specialised industries
These include the navy (ships and offshore platforms), fire brigades (for protective clothing and equipment) and other areas with special requirements for the protection of materials and hygiene.
Commercial washing machines are therefore indispensable wherever reliability, short wash cycles and high load capacity are required.
Miele Professional offers load capacities from 6 to 35 kg.
The following connections are usually required to operate one of our industrial washing machines:
- Power connection (electrical)
Depending on the model, this can be a standard connection (230 V) or a high-voltage connection (400 V, 440 V, 480 V). The exact design depends on the power and technical requirements of the machine. - Water connection
A connection for cold water (KW) is required (optionally also for hot water (WW)) to increase energy efficiency and shorten programme running times. - Waste water connection (drain)
A suitable drain for the waste water is required, either via a floor drain or a direct connection to the waste water system.
Depending on the location and model, additional requirements such as compressed air or special filter systems may be added. Please follow the installation instructions carefully.
It is not possible to give a general figure, as consumption depends greatly on the model, the load size and the type of connection (cold or hot water). The values generally fall within the following ranges:
- Water consumption:
Between 5.9 litres per kilogram of laundry for particularly efficient models and up to 10.3 litres per kilogram for less economical machines. - Energy consumption:
Depending on the features and connection, consumption ranges from 0.06 kWh per kilogram of laundry (with a hot water connection) to around 0.25 kWh per kilogram (when using cold water only).
These differences result from the design, the technologies used and the selected wash programmes. Our modern commercial washing machines are designed for high efficiency to reduce operating costs and conserve resources.
Depending on the model and design, the spin speed of our industrial washing machines is generally between 950 and 1600 revolutions per minute (rpm).
- Lower spin speeds (e.g. 600 rpm in the Minimum iron programme) are suitable for delicate fabrics to prevent material damage.
- Higher spin speeds (up to 1600 rpm) ensure particularly effective water removal, which significantly reduces drying time and increases energy efficiency.
Yes, Miele Professional washing machines offer a wide range of special programmes tailored to different materials and requirements. Some examples are:
- Woollen and delicate textiles
Gentle programmes with reduced mechanical action and low temperatures to protect the fibres. - Minimum iron textiles
Optimised wash cycles for mixed fibres that clean that clean gently, protect materials and reduce creasing. - Cleaning cloths (e.g. microfibre)
Special programmes that maintain the high dirt absorption capacity of cleaning cloths while ensuring hygienic cleanliness. - Fire brigade and protective clothing
Programmes for personal protective equipment, including masks and jackets that meet strict specifications for the protection of materials and decontamination. - Disinfection programmes
For areas with high hygiene standards, such as care facilities or hospitals, to reliably remove germs and bacteria.
These specialised programmes ensure that the materials in question are thoroughly cleaned and that their function and service life are protected.
Yes, depending on the model type and control system, our commercial washing machines offer the option of customising wash programmes. This means that you can flexibly adjust parameters such as temperature, spin speed, programme running time, water consumption and chemical dosage.
These adjustments are particularly important when different textiles or special hygiene standards need to be taken into account. For example, you can reduce the mechanical action for delicate fabrics or extend the soak duration for heavily soiled laundry.
In addition, many models allow you to save your own User programmes so that recurring tasks can be carried out quickly and efficiently.
Commercial washing machines must be serviced regularly to ensure long service life, reliable performance and compliance with hygiene standards. The exact maintenance frequency depends on the intensity of use – for daily use, a professional inspection at least once a year is recommended, and more frequently for very high usage. We are happy to support you in this regard with our PROtect service solutions.
Our commercial washing machines come with a 1-year warranty within the B2B (business-to-business) sector.
Please note that warranty conditions may vary depending on the country and do not cover wear parts or damage caused by improper use. For detailed information on warranty conditions, we recommend consulting the relevant documentation or our Customer Service department.
